Early Years

Our commitment at BSB is to create and maintain a safe, happy and child-centred environment in which children are inspired to become purposeful, life-long learners.

In the Foundation Stage our aim is that upon leaving Early Years BSB pupils have a strong sense of self, feel positive about their abilities as a learner, have formed constructive relationships and are confident communicators.

“Every child deserves the best possible start in life and support to fulfil their potential. A child’s experience in the early years has a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe and happy childhood is important in its’ own right, and it provides the foundation for children to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up. When parents choose to use early years services they want to know that provision will keep their children safe and help them to thrive. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the framework that provides that assurance.” Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (2008).

At BSB we follow the EYFS framework, which is statutory in the UK for all Ofsted registered settings. In doing this we are adopting a curriculum which entirely follows the British education system and provides children with the best possible start to their schooling by:

-  setting high standards for the learning, development and care of our children, ensuring that every child makes progress and that no child gets left behind;

providing for equality of opportunity, ensuring that every child is included and not disadvantaged because of ethnicity, culture or religion, home language, family background, learning difficulties or disabilities, gender or ability – this includes children who may be Gifted and Talented in areas of learning;

creating a partnership between parents and educators in which regular communication and mutual support is fundamental;

-  laying a secure foundation for future learning through learning and development that is planned around the individual needs and interests of the child, and informed by the use of ongoing observational assessment.

From the child’s perspective a curriculum such as this should be full of real-life, concrete experiences. Children will often be informally consulted about their learning environments and learning opportunities – we will always endeavour to follow their interests to ensure planned activities and themes are motivating for them. Pupils should feel happy, safe and secure at school and should have ownership of their classroom.

Pre-Nursery (ages 2 to 3)

The British School of Beijing offers a Pre-Nursery Unit specifically designed for children from the age of 2 to 3 years. Within this group your child will be well cared for as he or she enjoys the experience of learning through play. For children where English is not their native language, this is an ideal learning environment for effortless assimilation of the English language. The Pre-Nursery Unit provides a bridge between home and school. Within the group children learn to play and live with one another. Our aim is to contribute to children's development in all areas. This obviously requires constant communication between parents and teachers and includes termly reports (3 a year), letters and regular verbal communication. In addition we write daily messages to you about your child.

Nursery & Reception (ages 3 to 5)

The classes for three to five year olds provide a stimulating and creative environment where young children may experience a wide range of activities which lead into Key Stage 1 of the English National Curriculum. These two years are very important as they form the basis of a child's future education. At The British School of Beijing we follow the requirements set out in the Desirable Outcomes for Children's Learning (i.e. 6 goals for children's learning within the Early Years setting).

Language and Literacy covers important aspects of language development and provides the foundation for literacy. Children are helped to acquire competence in English as soon as possible. Particular emphasis is laid on speaking and listening and in pre-reading and pre-writing activities. In Mathematics children are introduced to important aspects of mathematical understanding and are provided with the foundation for numeracy. This is achieved through practical activities and by using and understanding simple mathematical language.

Our Personal and Social Development programme focuses on children learning how to work, play, co-operate with others and function in a group beyond the family.

The Physical Development programme aims to help children develop physical control, mobility, awareness of space and manipulative skills in indoor and outdoor environments. Children are actively encouraged to establish positive attitudes towards a healthy and active way of life. Creative Development focuses on stimulating children's imagination and their ability to communicate and express ideas and feelings in a creative way.
